Frances will serve as a guest speaker at the "Destination Hawaii: Creating Our Food, Investing In Our People, Strengthening Our Communities" gala event. She will discuss issues related to food security with three local Hawaiian chefs who are working to educate Hawaiians about food security and sustainability.
The topics of food security and local food are especially important to the island of Hawaii, a state that imports 85% of what is eaten, while exporting 90% of what is grown.
The event will be hosted by the Feed the Hunger Foundation, an organization that provides small loans to entrepreneurs involved in growing, distributing, processing, or marketing healthy, local food in low income neighborhoods. The Foundation provides loans to organizations working with low income women borrowers in regions including Inner Mongolia, Liberia, Nepal, and Sierra Leone.
